Key takeaways:

- Student products still matter, but they cannot prove learning by themselves.
- AI makes polished completion easier to produce and harder to interpret.
- Better evidence reconnects the product with the learner.
- The goal is not more documentation; it is more meaningful evidence of decisions, judgement, and ownership.
- Product and process belong together in AI-present learning design.

## Why Student Products Are No Longer Enough

### Transcript

There is a phrase that needs careful handling: student products are no longer enough.

That does not mean student products do not matter. They do. The essay matters. The presentation matters. The design matters. The analysis matters. The performance matters. Quality work still matters.

I’m Lee Crockett - welcome to the Culture of Excellence podcast.

This week I want to explore why products still matter, but cannot carry the full burden of proving learning in an AI-present world.

For a long time, final products have been asked to do a lot of evidentiary work. They show whether a student completed the task. They show something about quality. They may show accuracy, fluency, organisation, care, and the ability to communicate an idea.

All of that has value.

But products do not always show the decisions behind the work. They do not always show the judgement. They do not always show what was revised, what was rejected, what was misunderstood, what was clarified, or what the learner can stand behind.

AI makes that limitation harder to ignore. A polished response may now be easier to produce. That can be helpful when support deepens learning. It becomes a problem when the support improves the product while hiding the learner.

A student might submit a stronger paragraph without understanding why it is stronger. They might present a clearer explanation without evaluating the reasoning. They might create a more sophisticated product without being able to defend the choices behind it.

This is why a product-only model becomes fragile. It asks the final artefact to show quality, process, understanding, judgement, originality, revision, and ownership all at once. Sometimes it can show part of that story. Increasingly, it cannot show enough.

The stronger response is not to distrust every product. It is to reconnect products with better evidence of process.

A student might compare an AI-generated explanation with a trusted source. They might annotate the revision that improved meaning. They might explain why they accepted one suggestion and rejected another. They might defend the final position in conversation.

None of this needs to become heavy. The point is not to turn learning into paperwork. The point is to make the most important moments of thinking visible enough to support feedback, responsibility, and growth.

This is where product and process belong together. The product gives learning a form. The process gives the product meaning. The product shows what was produced. The process helps reveal how the learner thought, judged, revised, and took responsibility.

If we only value process, learning can become vague. If we only value product, learning can become opaque. The work is to design the relationship between them more deliberately.

In an AI-present classroom, a product might still be the final destination, but it should carry clearer traces of the journey. Not every step. Not a full transcript. Just enough meaningful evidence to show that the learner remained active, thoughtful, and responsible.

For leaders, the practical move is straightforward. Choose one product students already create. Then ask what one piece of process evidence would make that product more trustworthy and more teachable.

Could students explain one decision? Could they annotate one revision? Could they compare one AI suggestion with a trusted source? Could they defend one choice in conversation? Could they identify where support helped and where their own judgement mattered?

These are small moves, but they change the evidentiary strength of the task. They help teachers see the learner inside the work. They help students become more conscious of their own thinking. They help schools distinguish between support that strengthened learning and support that quietly replaced it.

Student products still matter. But the product is strongest when it carries traces of the learner's judgement, revision, and ownership.

That is the Visible Agency move.
