From Curriculum to Contribution: Turning a Theme Week Into Authentic, Student-Driven Learning

Case Summary
Through a structured, inquiry-driven challenge, Calrossy used Water Week to unify teaching practice and deepen student engagement. Teachers moved from linear lesson planning to more iterative, reflective design, supported by new templates, shared language, and collective planning processes. Learners thrived in hands-on, real-world problem-solving — from testing water quality to investigating local sustainability issues — building empathy, curiosity, and agency. Staff described the experience as energising, practical, and transformative, with the challenge becoming a springboard for ongoing whole-school innovation.
