Penrhos College: Study 1

Penrhos College embarked on this Year 1 Science project with a clear intention: build strong inquiry skills, deepen empathy, and shift teachers toward genuine student-led learning. What began as an exploration of living things quickly grew into something much bigger — a meaningful, authentic investigation driven entirely by learner curiosity. With a rescued long-necked turtle named Rocky at the centre, students discovered the power of inquiry, agency, and purpose-driven action. Their teachers found the courage to step back — and watched their learners step forward.

From Curriculum Content to Purpose-Driven Agency: Turning Scientific Inquiry Into Meaningful Community Impact

Case Summary
Through a human-centred, inquiry-driven approach, Penrhos College’s Year 1 team transformed a standard Science unit into a powerful example of deep agency in action. Caring for a rescued long-necked turtle sparked authentic curiosity, leading students to investigate local habitats, identify real threats to native species, and design community solutions that made a tangible difference. Teachers shifted from directing learning to guiding it, while students embraced responsibility, collaboration, and creativity. The project culminated in reusable conservation-themed bags, videos, and messaging—with all proceeds donated to Perth Zoo to protect local turtle species.

In Their Words

  • “I watched my students take ownership of their learning in ways I’d never seen before. Once we stepped back, they asked deeper questions, collaborated naturally, and drove the entire investigation with genuine curiosity.”
  • “The structure gave me the confidence to move from directing learning to guiding it. The students’ empathy, problem-solving, and sense of responsibility grew far beyond the curriculum.”
  • “Seeing five- and six-year-olds design real solutions — videos, conservation messages, fundraising — showed me the power of agency. This experience completely changed the way I think about inquiry.”

“This project showed us what happens when young learners are trusted with real responsibility and meaningful work. The shift in agency — for both students and teachers — was profound. Our staff gained confidence to step back, and our learners stepped forward with purpose, curiosity, and compassion.”
